By the Numbers: Euro 2024 qualifying permutations heading into the fall
Who needs to do what in order to book their place in next summer's finals
Qualifying for the 2024 European Championship continues this fall with the October and November international windows.
Germany will host the tournament, which is scheduled to take place from June 14 to July 14. In all, 24 teams qualify for the finals. To date, only Germany, as the host nation, have qualified.
Twenty of those teams advance via the qualifying groups. Another 12 make the playoffs, where only three teams reach the finals.
Only four groups, A, B, F and J, could see teams advance next month, while C, D, E, G and H remain competitive. Qualifiers resume on Oct. 12.
Here are the permutations to look for following this week’s games:
Group A:
— Scotland qualify if they beat Spain or if Norway do not win against Cyprus.
Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard were on target Tuesday as Norway made Scotland wait to qualify for Euro 2024 with a 2-1 victory over Georgia. Scotland needed the Group A match to end in a draw to seal their spot for the finals, but Haaland's header and Odegaard’s strike ended those hopes before halftime.
Group B:
— France qualify if they beat the Netherlands or if they draw and Greece lose to Ireland.
France, led by Kylian Mbappe, defeated the Dutch 4-0 the last time these sides clashed in this same qualifying group. Mbappe scored twice in that match. But the French not only need to win, but will qualify should Ireland defeat Greece at the same time.
Group F:
— Belgium or Austria will qualify if either of them win in their head-to-head match.
The sides played to a 1-1 draw previously in this group and this second encounter should be competitive once again. Win and you’re in. That’s what both sides need to qualify.
Group J:
— Portugal qualify if they win or draw against Slovakia and Luxembourg lose to Iceland.
Portugal have won all six of their games and are very likely to wrap things up next month against second-place Slovakia. Portugal defeated Slovakia 1-0 last Friday on a goal by Bruno Fernandes.
