Kick your Monday off with all the news from this past weekend
Good morning and happy Monday!
The highlight of this past weekend — or maybe it should be called a lowlight — was Manchester City’s fifth Premier League defeat of the season.
Making matters worse, the loss came against rivals Manchester United, who scored two goals in the game’s final two minutes to mark the stunning comeback.
Meanwhile, yet another soccer match was marred by violence — this time the League Cup final in the Glasgow derby between Celtic and Rangers.
As Christmas approaches, the title race in both La Liga and Serie A remain tight, while the U.S. women’s team ended the year as the world’s highest-ranked team.
Here’s a look at the biggest storylines from this past weekend:
Premier League: Manchester City lose once again
Another day, another defeat for Man City.
Following a 2-1 defeat on Sunday to rivals Manchester United, Pep Guardiola declared himself “not good enough” to serve as the club’s manager.
The four-time defending Premier League champion has lost eight of its last 11 matches across all competitions. As a result, Man City is fifth in the standings and nine points behind leader Liverpool.
“I’m the boss. I’m the manager and I’m not good enough,’” Guardiola told reporters. “It’s as simple as that. I’m not doing well. That is the truth.”
The comments came soon after Amad Diallo struck a 90th-minute winner as Manchester United staged a stunning late comeback to beat Man City in the derby.
Scottish League Cup: Celtic win amid violence
Violent scenes in Glasgow marred the start of Sunday’s Scottish League Cup final between rivals Celtic and Rangers.
Authorities said there were reports of broken windows and fans who threw flares at police officers.
Videos posted to social media showed flares let off in the city center as Christmas shoppers ducked for cover.
“We have dealt with a number of incidents in Glasgow city center today involving individuals engaging in disorder and violence across the city,” chief superintendent Stevie Dolan said. “The use of weapons or violence will not be tolerated and officers will take action where necessary to ensure safety.
As for the game at Hampden Park, Celtic won 5-4 on penalty kicks after the game ended 3-3 following extra time.
La Liga: Atletico level with Barcelona at the top of the table
Barcelona stayed top of the Spanish league despite a stunning 1-0 home defeat on Sunday to Leganes, a team that had not won on the road all season.
At the same time, Atletico Madrid beat Getafe 1-0 to leapfrog city rivals Real Madrid and go second. Both Barcelona and Atletico have 38 points.
Playing in the first of five La Liga matches on Sunday, Atletico won its sixth straight league game to move a point clear of Real, which could only draw 3-3 with Real Vallecano on Saturday.
The results set up a mouthwatering clash between the top two at Barcelona next Saturday.
The Madrid side will go into the match with the momentum after recording its 11th straight victory in all competitions.
In other news: Unbeaten PSG moved seven points clear at the top of the French league with a 3-1 win against Lyon on Sunday that was marred and briefly interrupted by homophobic chanting. PSG got off to a great start at the Parc des Princes and led 2-0 after 14 minutes thanks to goals from Ousmane Dembele, and Vitinha from the penalty spot. … A week after being named Serie A coach of the month, Gian Piero Gasperini showed why he is also a contender for coach of the year again. Gasperini’s substitutions had an immediate impact as Atalanta won at lowly Cagliari 1-0 on Saturday for a club record 10th straight Serie A win. That ensured Atalanta would end the weekend on top of the table. Atalanta remained two points above second-placed Napoli, which fought back to beat Udinese 3-1. … The United States women’s team ended the year No. 1 in the FIFA rankings. The team coached by Emma Hayes won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics to mark its turnaround after its reign as world champion ended last year.
