Hudson leaves USMNT as second interim coach is named
B.J. Callaghan will coach the team at the upcoming Nations League and Gold Cup
Anthony Hudson will leave his post as USMNT interim manager for a new position and will be replaced by assistant coach B.J. Callaghan, U.S. Soccer announced on Tuesday.
Callaghan will coach the team at this summer’s CONCACAF Nations League and the Gold Cup.
U.S. Soccer said that “the search for a permanent head coach is underway.”
The federation’s decision to wait until after the summer to hire a permanent coach has been criticized, especially since the U.S. has now had two interim managers in six months following the Gregg Berhalter scandal that engulfed the team at the end of last year.
“B.J. has been an integral part of the USMNT staff during the last four years as this young team has grown and developed,” said U.S. Soccer Sporting Director Matt Crocker. “Working alongside Anthony Hudson these last five months, we are confident he is prepared and ready to lead this group in the summer tournaments.”
Callaghan, 41, has served as assistant coach for the last four years and currently the longest-serving member of the USMNT coaching staff. He previously worked as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Union.
“I understand the responsibility of the job and am honored to have the opportunity to build upon the progress this group has made the last four years,” Callaghan said in a statement. “Together, we have built a strong culture and a great understanding of how we want to play, and we expect to continue to build on that progress. Our goal is clear — defend both of our Concacaf titles.”
