Man City tanks again, Napoli-Inter draw and Inter Miami's shock elimination
Kick your Monday off with all the news from this past weekend
Happy Veterans Day!
Let us extend our gratitude to all the men and women who have served for their selflessness and recognize the sacrifices they have made as members of the United States Armed Forces.
We also start off this Monday with a pair of shock results: Manchester lose a fourth straight game and Inter Miami were eliminated from the MLS Cup Playoffs by Atlanta United FC.
For more on these two teams, and more, check out this weekend’s biggest storylines:
Premier League: Is Man City’s title dominance over?
A sense of dread is looming over Manchester — and it’s not just because United is so bad this season.
Manchester City lost its fourth straight game in all competitions after a 2-1 defeat at Brighton on Saturday, falling five points behind leaders Liverpool in the Premier League.
Liverpool, meanwhile, beat Aston Villa 2-0 thanks to goals by Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah.
But it’s City that’s stolen the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. In fact, the club hasn’t lost four games straight since 2006 — two years before the Abu Dhabi takeover of the club and 10 years before Guardiola’s game-changing arrival.
As for Guardiola, he’s never lost four straight games during his time in management since it started in 2007.
Serie A: Napoli and Inter play to a 1-1 draw
In a top-of-the-table clash, leaders Napoli and defending champion Inter Milan played to a 1-1 draw at the San Siro on Sunday — leaving six teams within two points of each other atop the Serie A table.
Scott McTominay put Napoli ahead in the first half. Inter responded when Hakan Calhanoglu equalized before the break with a swerving long-distance effort.
But Calhanoglu then missed a penalty kick — the first after scoring 19 straight — that hit off the post midway through the second half.
Napoli has 26 points, a point ahead of Atalanta, Fiorentina, Inter and Lazio. Juventus are sixth with two points back.
Roma’s season took another step back following a 3-2 home defeat to Bologna that cost manager Ivan Juric his job. The club, currently in 12th place, announced shortly after the game that Juric had been fired, marking the club’s second coaching change this season.
MLS: Messi not enough as Atlanta advance
Lionel Messi has won it all — expect for an MLS Cup.
That drought continues, at least for another year, after Atlanta United FC’s 3-2 win Saturday in a comeback for the ages. The win allowed the team to take Game 3 and advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Bartosz Slisz scored the winner in the 76th minute to ensure that No. 9 seed Atlanta overturned the deficit in the series, having lost their first trip to Chase Stadium.
As for Inter Miami, the shock elimination comes after the team dominated the regular season and won the Supporters’ Shield for finishing with the best record.
