Kick your Monday off with all the news from this past weekend
Good morning!
The first weekend of November — a time when we set our clocks back for daylight savings time — saw some of the world’s best clubs also take a step in reverse.
In fact, the weekend was highlighted by a series of major upsets: Manchester City lost, Serie A leaders Napoli went down in flames and Inter Miami were left stunned. Seasonal depression may have set in early for these teams at a time when the big games have arrived.
With that, here are the weekend’s biggest storylines:
Premier League: Man City goes down in defeat
Manchester City’s 32-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League ended Saturday in a 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth as Liverpool took back the league lead.
It was a day of upsets across England — Arsenal lost 1-0 at Newcastle — that gave Liverpool (2-1 winners to defeat Brighton) a command of the title race.
However, the biggest surprise came at Bournemouth thanks to goals from Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson. Josko Gvardiol pulled one goal back in the 82nd minute, while Man City striker Erling Haaland’s header slammed against the post in stoppage time.
It was Manchester City’s first league loss of 2024, but second straight 2-1 defeat in all competitions after being eliminated from the League Cup by Tottenham in midweek.
Liverpool now have 25 points, followed by Man City with 23. Nottingham Forest, 3-0 winners against West Ham, are in third with 19 points.
Serie A: Napoli lose and Inter take advantage
Ademola Lookman scored twice in the first half to lift Atalanta to a 3-0 win on Sunday against Serie A leaders Napoli.
Lookman opened the scoring after just 10 minutes, volleying home from close range after a headed cross from Charles De Ketelaere. He added a second in the 31st minute and Mateo Retegui scored a third in stoppage time at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Inter, in second and just a point behind Napoli, took advantage with a 1-0 home win against Venezia. Lautaro Martinez scored the game’s only goal in the 65th minute.
Napoli and Inter square off next Sunday in the league’s biggest game of the season at the San Siro.
MLS: Atlanta United stun Inter Miami
Who says Inter Miami has this thing won?
Atlanta United’s Xande Silva tallied a 94th-minute winner on Saturday to give his side a stunning 2-1 victory over Lionel Messi and Inter Miami, winners of the Supporters’ Shield after amassing the the best record during the regular season.
The result forces a Game 3 in their Best-of-3 Series and keeps the Eastern Conference No. 9 seed's Cinderalla run in the MLS Cup Playoffs alive.
In other games, New York City FC forced a deciding match with a 3-1 win over FC Cincinnati at Citi Field on Saturday. In another big upset, the defending MLS Cup champions Columbus Crew SC was eliminated at the hands of the New York Red Bulls 5-4 on penalty kicks. The game, held on Sunday at Red Bull Arena, ended 2-2 in regulation.
