Opinion: 6 soccer podcasts you can't live without
A guide to some essential listening when it comes to the world's game
I love podcasts. I love podcasts that deal with politics, food and religion. I like to listen to anything that makes me think.
I also love podcasts that discuss sports and specifically soccer.
My desire to listen to podcasts comes from my childhood love of radio. I listened to Premier League (or should I say the old English First Division) and Serie A in the 1980s when TV wasn’t an option for live broadcasts.
That eventually morphed into my love for sports radio as a constant companion in the mornings and sometimes late into the night.
Here are six soccer podcasts (with links to each one) you should be listening to all year, but especially if you’re going for a long walk on the beach or just sitting by the pool this summer:
Glenn Davis, a longtime broadcaster and former soccer player with a great voice, brings you everything from the world of soccer with a focus on Houston. You can catch him every Tuesday at 7 p.m. Central Time live on ESPN 97.5 and 92.5 FM in the Houston area. You can listen to the show as a podcast after it airs.
Transfer news guru and all-around great journalist to follow on Twitter, Fabrizio Romano, along with Francesco Porzio, bring you into the world of wheeling and dealing when it comes to who’s going where and why. Named after Romano’s catchphrase whenever he tweets out about a new deal, the podcast is part of the ever-growing “Men in Blazers” universe of content.
Oh yes! Co-hosts Andrew Gundling and J.J. Devaney offer up their views on everything from the Premier League to the U.S. National Team to MLS. The duo play well off each other as Devaney, an Irish-born Liverpool supporter, often tangles with Gundling, a Tottenham fan, and “my American brain.”
If you’re looking for a place that tackles both the game and soccer memorabilia, then this is the podcast for you. Co-hosted by Jason Flynn and Enzo Patriarca, this Euro-centric podcast (they are based in Dublin) also works for American listeners. It is often heavy on soccer news (always a great thing!) and what it means for those who like to collect soccer cards around the world. And yes, they even sell trading cards!
U.S. soccer legend Alexi Lalas and FOX Sports researcher/writer David Mosse join forces to talk about the latest from the soccer world. Lalas isn’t afraid to call people out, while Mosse’s ability to rattle off stats and give context always makes for a great show. I had the chance to interview Lalas for USSoccerPlayers.com ahead of the 2022 World Cup. You can read that interview here.
1. The Athletic Football Podcast
This podcast, which runs four times a week throughout the Premier League season, is hosted by Mark Chapman. Featuring a revolving panel of guests, they tackle the biggest stories and bring exclusive news from one of the best sports sites in the world.
